M’sian Relief Agency spearheads water pump installation in Yemen

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA), together with the Charitable Society for Social Welfare (CSSW) – a Yemen-based non-governmental organisation – have installed a solar-powered water pump in the Al-Saeed, Golah and Souq Al-Qadeem districts of Shabwah in the war-ravaged nation.

MRA president Dr Mohd Daud Sulaiman said the Ta’dib Community Development project is affording clean water access for some 14,000 residents and several mosques and schools in the areas.

“At present, access to clean water is among the major problems in Yemen, as most of the water resources have been destroyed in the war.

“Therefore, I believe that clean water aid is crucial right now,” said Dr Mohd Daud, who is also MRA’s head of humanitarian aid to Yemen.

He added that the MRA also intends to build 10 solar-powered water pumps throughout Yemen, at a cost of RM2.5 million.

Also involved in the humanitarian initiative are MRA Training and Development director Mohd Rezaidi Ishak; MRA International Operations executive Mohd Fadhil Baharudin; and Yemen MRA project coordinator Mohd Lutfi Hafifi Japili.

Meanwhile, Rezaidi said kabilah heads, local heads, teachers and imams have been given training on the water pump’s operations, so that all parties can benefit from the Ta’dib Community Development programme.

“This Ta’dib Community Development is a special module developed by MRA to educate the beneficiaries (of the project) in order to maximise (its benefits) and have a future plan,” he added.

MRA also calls on Malaysians to show their support to the Yemeni people by giving monetary contributions through the Malaysian Relief Agency Foundation.
